How Does EMS Work?

EMS uses safe high-intensity electromagnetic pulses to activate muscles and create contractions, simulating a workout. These pulses are delivered at such a fast rate it causes the muscles to be used with greater force and speed than a workout. These muscle contractions trigger the body to release adrenaline, which narrows blood vessels, opens airways, and promotes the natural chemical breakdown of fat. Fatty acids are broken down and excreted from the body by the metabolism within a few weeks.

How many EMS treatments are recommended?

At our non-invasive body contouring spa near you, most clients experience visible results within four weeks after their final treatment. To achieve optimal results, we recommend a treatment plan of 4 to 6 sessions. While some results may be noticeable after the first treatment, the best outcomes are typically seen after 4 to 6 sessions. We suggest scheduling two treatments per week for three weeks, with a gap of 2-3 days between each session to allow the body to recover and rebuild muscles, as well as facilitate the natural waste elimination process. Are adverse reactions immediate after treatment? What are the normal side effects?

In terms of adverse reactions, a lot of them take time to come on post-treatment. Side effects are rare and are usually cleared up pretty quickly. The most common side effect is mild, temporary muscle soreness, however nothing as intense as what you would feel from a traditional intense workout.

  • Temporary muscle soreness or fatigue after treatment
  • Temporary itching in the treated area
  • More thirsty and tired than usual for the first 24 hours
  • Becoming a little sweaty during treatment
  • Slight redness in the treatment area

The phased nature of the building contractions combined with the pauses at select intervals help the body minimize lactic acid build-up which is a cause of muscle soreness. Lactic acid can cause muscle soreness, so the EMS treatment process prevents clients from getting too sore like a traditional workout.

When will I see the results?

Most clients see final visible results approximately four weeks after final treatment. EMS is generally more effective with a treatment plan of 4 to 6 treatments.

Typical results include:

  • 19% fat reduction
  • 16% increase in muscle mass
  • Loss of 5 to 9 cm at the waist circumference

How does EMS build muscles?

Our non-invasive body contouring spa near you offers a cutting-edge procedure that utilizes high-intensity electromagnetic energy to stimulate intense (supramaximal) muscular contractions in the target muscles. This innovative technique induces approximately 20,000 contractions in just 20 to 30 minutes, equivalent to performing 20,000 crunches or squats! Experience the latest in body shaping innovation at our face and body spa with our range of body contouring treatments.

What does an electrical muscle stimulator do?

The muscle stimulator creates an electrical charge to cause muscle contraction inside the body. Most devices send a specific charge that can be adjusted in intensity and length (time the charge lasts) through electrodes that are applied to the body. The electrodes can be applied anywhere. Only muscles near the electrodes will contract.

Can you do too much EMS?

There are no known side effects to EMS use, and long-term EMS use is not harmful, however, as with a normal muscle workout, some soreness can occur following treatment. To avoid this, use a lower intensity on your next treatment.

What To Expect During Treatment

During a treatment, paddles or pads are placed on the target area. EMS sends pulses that create a continuous expansion and contraction of the muscles. This delivers approximately 20,000 muscular contractions in just 20 to 30 minutes (per treatment area). You may feel sore for a few days post treatment just as you would experience muscle soreness after a challenging workout. There is no pain, no incisions and downtime, you can resume normal activity immediately after treatment!
